Worship Bacon

December 4th, 2008 by Mike Lopez

Just about anything in and out of this world can be worshiped – even Bacon!  Yeah, that’s right.  One of the guys I follow on Twitter posted a link to WorshipBacon.com and man it made me laugh.  The site basically is about bacon worship and comes completed with a church, a holy book and a hymn.

But why am I talking about this?  Well, thing is, anyone can choose to worship anything and call it a religion.  While I believe that Worship Bacon was meant for humor, there are people who take divinity seriously that they’re even willing to die for it.  The object of worship can be anything.  It can be the sun, the moon, the stars, bacon, a tree, spirits or even a neon-colored flying kangaroo with horns.

The fun however doesn’t end there.  For some reason, people all-throughout history have been bragging about whom they worship.  One tribe says their god/dess is better than the other tribe and the other tribe retaliates by saying that theirs is more powerful and so on and so forth.  Many nations have fought in the name of their deity and many people have died for such foolish imaginations.

On the other hand, worship is not all bad.  It also brings some sort of assurance to the person practicing it.  In fact, scientific studies show that religious people are happier than non-religious ones.  Does this mean that atheists are less happy than theists?  I don’t think so.  The reason why I say this is because being religious does not necessarily mean god-worship.  I can be religious with my diet if I want to and a student can be religious with his studies.

I remember talking to a friend (a Christian) about atheism and I told him that faith and worship can be practiced even by atheists in the sense that faith is merely putting hope and belief in something that has not yet been attained and worship can simply be love for something.  I personally think that a person who “believes that he will get the job” has faith and the wife who loves her husband is practically worshiping her husband (reminds me of the Filipino love song “Sinasamba Kita” which means “I Worship You”).

Faith and worship drives a person to do what he has to do which is perhaps why religious people are happier than non-religious ones.  Not because they have some diety to worship but perhaps because they have something that drives them in their everyday life.

Oh well… enough of this.  Just remember, when you go to church, try worshiping the bacon instead.

I’ll share a experience of mine. It happened only yesterday. The local priest in the Calamba parish mentioned in his homilee about St. John the Baptist’s conversation with the people looking for the messiah. I listened to the Bible passage and I got the message. But what struck me is that his homilee is so freaking far fetch! At the start of his homilee, he started mentioning some sort of anti-atheist statement, somewhat comparing them to hedonists etc. Honestly, I am not an atheist, but I have friends who are atheists. I am somewhat offended about the homilee and yeah, the thought of “hypocrism at its best” came running through my mind. In my opinion, if you dont agree with someone’s worldview, why you cant just leave them alone, and let them be themselves? What if there are atheists who happen to hear his homilee? somewhat bashing them like they are satanists or people who dont exist because they dont believe in God. I am liberal and I believe that people should be left alone in their beliefs. We should not be forcing our opinions and beliefs to them. We all have our own beliefs and we dont have the right to judge one another because of their difference to their beliefs. After the priest’s sermon, I was kinda angry but I remembered something: “Let the one without sin cast the first stone”

Well, there are people (priests or not) who just can’t resist acting like they’re the holy and the rest of the world are not.

As for let “the one without sin cast the first stone” – it seems that no one will be casting the stone and if no one is worthy to cast the first stone but people cast stones anyway. I guess it’s in our nature. :)
