Why Atheism?

I think it’s time that I stand up and speak out my beliefs.  I’ve been an atheist since late last 2007 and I have to admit that I was a bit reluctant to echo my thoughts to the world at first since I live in a so-called “Christian Country” wherein the majority of the population are Christians.  Then their are the muslims and a bunch of other religions.  And of course the cults.  In other words, Filipinos are mainly religious people – believing in at least one god and brought up that way.

I was born in a Catholic Christian family but eventually became “born again” in which I became an active follower of the “Lord”.  I lead the praise and worship team and have been considered “a blessing” by many.  I also used to actively lead bible studies and even became head of our church’s mission department for one year.

That said, I’ve “brought many souls to the Lord” and have helped restore the faith of others.  But something was wrong.  Not in me but in the belief that I’ve been following for almost my entire life.  The more I study the God that I follow, the more it dawned on me that he’s one God that I wouldn’t want to worship.  Then my focus turned towards the god(s) of other religions but it didn’t take me long that they’re no different to the Christian god.

And thus I became an atheist.  Well at first, I was kind of an agnostic.  Not taking sides, respecting all beliefs but then I thought why stay in the middle ground?  Why not choose one side and stand for it?  That’s when I really became an atheist.  I told my wife and my kids about it and shared it to a few friends.  They were all appalled by my decision and they feared that my soul will go to hell.

I told them that I chose atheism simply because it’s factual and logical.  The main factor though to me becoming in atheist is the bible.  I’ve read it over and over and over again – from Genesis to Relevation and each time I read it, I became more of an athest and less of a theist.  Thanks to the Bible for that, it did set me free.

Lastly, this site is meant for the purpose of sharing my thoughts and beliefs to the world the same way I shared my Christian beliefs before.  I might not make as many converts but at least I expect to find more Filipino atheists out there like me.  I know I’m not alone!
